…but where was it? And was it ever fired?
Mikki Schwarzkopf of Jefferson will provide the answers at a Greene County Historical Society meeting Friday, June 2, at 12:45 pm at the First Presbyterian Church at 208 W. State St in Jefferson.
The free program, which is open to the public, follows a noon lunch.
The story of the Civil War cannon, which sat on a two-wheeled carriage, has been long forgotten. Schwarzkopf will tell the tale of how the big gun got to Jefferson, the two places where it stood, and what happened to it.
Schwarzopf has researched several events of times gone by in Greene County for the Historical Society, including the women’s suffrage movement, Chautauqua and how the county responded to World War II
There is, of course, another big gun in town, the Viet Nam era M60 A3 tank located in the Memorial Gardens on E. Lincoln Way. That’s a story for another time.
To reserve a place at the lunch table, call 515-386-4408, or your Historical Society community contact by Tuesday, May 30. Cost for the meal is $10. ~by Denise Van for the Greene County Historical Society
